Understanding ANSI Safety Vest Classes

Not all hi-vis vests are the same — the right class depends on vehicle speed, worker proximity to traffic, and job site conditions.

Class 1

For workers separated from traffic by a barrier. Off-road environments, parking lots, and warehouses where vehicles travel under 25 mph. Minimum background and retroreflective material requirements.

Class 2

The most common job site vest. Required where workers are near traffic up to 50 mph — road construction, utilities, survey crews, and airport ground operations. More background material and wider reflective striping than Class 1.

Class 3

Maximum visibility for workers exposed to high-speed traffic (50+ mph) or in low-visibility conditions. Reflective material must cover the torso and sleeves. Typically jackets and hoodies rather than vests.

What ANSI class safety vest do I need? ⌄
It depends on your work environment and proximity to traffic. Class 1 is for low-risk off-road settings. Class 2 is the most common for road construction, utilities, and survey work near traffic up to 50 mph. Class 3 is required for high-speed road environments and low-visibility conditions. OSHA standards and your employer's site safety plan will specify the required class for your situation.
Can you screen print or embroider logos on safety vests? ⌄
Yes. We screen print and embroider safety vests in-house. Screen printing works well for large back logos and bold designs on mesh vests. Embroidery is ideal for left-chest placement on solid or surveyor-style vests. Decoration placement must not cover required retroreflective striping — we follow ANSI/ISEA 107 guidelines when positioning artwork.
