Flame Resistant Embroidery — What You Need to Know

Standard embroidery thread is made from petroleum-based polyester or rayon — and when applied to FR garments, it can create a fuel source that burns directly over the protected garment. That defeats the entire purpose of wearing FR clothing.

At American Casual, we use FR-approved embroidery thread that is engineered to self-extinguish. This keeps your garment NFPA 2112 compliant after decoration. Here's what sets FR embroidery apart:

  • Thread certified not to burn, melt, or drip when exposed to an arc flash or flash fire
  • Backing materials selected to maintain the garment's thermal protective performance (TPP) rating
  • Placement sized and positioned to avoid reducing arc thermal protection value (ATPV)
  • Compatible with Bulwark EXCEL FR®, Bulwark iQ Series®, and most major FR fabric systems

Ask us for documentation on our FR embroidery process — we can provide thread certifications for employer compliance records.

Flame Resistant Apparel — FAQ

What is flame resistant (FR) apparel?
Flame resistant apparel is workwear made from fabrics that self-extinguish when the ignition source is removed. Unlike standard clothing, FR garments won't continue to burn, melt, or drip — significantly reducing burn injuries from arc flash, flash fire, and other thermal hazards. FR clothing is required by OSHA and NFPA standards in many industries including oil & gas, electrical utilities, and petrochemical facilities.
What is the difference between NFPA 2112 and NFPA 70E?
NFPA 2112 is the standard for flame resistant garments protecting industrial workers from flash fire — commonly used in oil & gas, petrochemical, and refinery environments. NFPA 70E addresses electrical arc flash hazards and sets requirements for arc-rated PPE in electrical work environments. Many garments are rated to both standards. When selecting FR workwear, your employer's hazard risk assessment (HRA) should determine which standard applies.
Can you embroider logos on FR garments without voiding compliance?
Yes — when done correctly. At American Casual, we use FR-approved thread and backing materials that are certified not to melt, drip, or contribute to burning. Standard polyester embroidery thread is a fire hazard on FR garments and must never be used. Our FR embroidery process maintains the garment's NFPA 2112 compliance and we can provide thread certification documentation upon request.
What FR brands do you carry and customize?
We stock and customize Bulwark FR, Kishigo, and Berne. Bulwark is the most widely specified FR brand in electrical and industrial settings, with EXCEL FR® and iQ Series® being our most popular product lines. Kishigo excels in hi-vis FR garments, and Berne offers durable FR workwear at more accessible price points.
What is the minimum order quantity for custom FR workwear?
Minimums vary depending on the decoration method and garment type. Embroidery typically has lower minimums than screen printing. Contact our team at 714-630-2002 or team@american-casual.com and we'll find a solution that fits your crew size and budget.
How long does an order of custom FR uniforms take?
Our standard turnaround is 10 business days from approved artwork and payment. If you need FR workwear faster, we offer rush production down to 48 hours depending on garment availability and decoration method.
Do you deliver FR workwear to job sites in Orange County and Los Angeles?
Yes. American Casual operates delivery vans serving Orange County (North and South), Los Angeles, and the Inland Empire. We can deliver completed FR uniform orders directly to your job site, office, or facility. You can also pick up from our Anaheim showroom at your convenience.
